A water-damaged bathroom cabinet, as a result of a long-term leaking shower, was the motivating factor behind Jennifer Flachs’ decision to finally renovate the ensuite bathroom of the 3-bedroom townhouse she shares with her husband, in Ashby Grove, Eaglemont, Victoria. Built in 2003, the bathroom was not only showing its’ age, but was also very cramped, with a less than ideal layout.
“When looking for someone to do the renovation, I came across Refresh Renovations on Facebook and contacted them,” said Jennifer. “We had a few appointments and listened to the advice from Renovation Specialist, Paul Cree and his Construction Manager, Tas Boucher,” she added.

Ensuite bathroom design

“We completed a comprehensive assessment of different concepts for Jennifer, providing 3D representations to create a clear visualisation of how the space would look,” said Paul. We were able to extend the existing ensuite by using the space from an adjacent walk-in wardrobe. This allowed us to reconfigure the layout and create a user-friendly bathroom. A built-in wardrobe was installed in the main bedroom to replace the old walk-in robe,” he explained.

Bathroom renovation

The wall between the walk-in wardrobe and ensuite was removed to create the much-needed additional space to accommodate the new layout and design. This now includes a larger shower area, with a frameless glass screen and 200mm x 200mm rainfall showerhead. The larger floor space, allows for greater comfort and ease of movement in the new bathroom. Steam and moisture is managed through a ceiling exhaust fan and heating for those cold Melbourne mornings, comes from the overhead, ceiling-mounted, bathroom heat lamps. A recessed shelf in the shower provides a storage solution for shampoo and toiletries. The room now boasts double undermount sinks within a wall-hung vanity, finished with a Ceasarstone Calacatta Nuvo benchtop. Floor to ceiling, large format tiles in grey and white tones, with contrasting black tapware, sets the scene for a truly modern and sleek bathroom.
“I was originally going to go with Chrome tapware as I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but when I went to the shop and saw the black, I just loved it and knew it would suit our design. It’s a real feature of the new bathroom,” said Jennifer.
The project was completed within a 6-week timeframe and within the A$34k budget. There were no issues or delays, and as this is the second bathroom in the home, there was minimal disruption to the day-to-day operation of the household during the project.

Using a project manager was definitely worthwhile. I don’t have the time or the skill to pull all the trades together

The benefits of working with a Refresh Renovations franchise

“Using a project manager was definitely worthwhile. I don’t have the time or the skill to pull all the trades together, so I couldn’t even attempt to do it myself,” said Jennifer. “Having Paul here was fantastic,” she added.
“I also found the Refresh customer portal was a great project tool. It was very useful for approvals or variations. Paul could just load the information up and send it to us for approval. It’s a really efficient way to manage a project,” she added.
The walk in wardrobe was replaced with a built-in wardrobe in the bedroom. By using sliding doors, the space and functionality of the bedroom was not compromised and the wardrobe provides more than enough storage for clothing, shoes and all the usual contents of a wardrobe.
“The best feature of the bathroom is definitely the shower. It’s easy to use and so spacious. Now that we have completed one great bathroom, we would really like to renovate the second bathroom and eventually the kitchen and we look forward to working with Refresh again in the future,” said the delighted homeowner.
