This is a good question and one that many bungalow and villa owners are faced with. Back in the 1920s, before shopping malls existed, there wasn’t much call for large wardrobes for the simple reason that most people didn’t possess that many clothes. Times have changed and good wardrobe storage is a must, so the challenge you are faced with is to provide modern wardrobe storage without sacrificing the original bungalow décor. If you can do this, you will not only improve your lifestyle, you will also add immeasurably to the resale value of your home.
Most villas and bungalows were built without wardrobes, and if they had one, the original built-in wardrobes tended to be very basic and small. They were also usually very shallow. There was a trend in the 1970s and 80s to retrofit wardrobes, but as most older houses then were not valued very highly, the wardrobes were poorly designed and built.
To try and re-fit the existing wardrobe with a low cost DIY kitset, it would probably consume a lot of time without any real benefit or improvement, and it certainly would add nothing to the resale value of your home.
So the best route to follow would be to call in a specialist wardrobe company that has a good track record with designing and constructing wardrobes in villas and bungalows.
Visit their showroom first to get a good idea of what they can do. They should be able to design the exterior of the wardrobe as well as supply both door systems and wardrobe organisers. Bring along some basic measurements of your space, so they can work through a concept design with you. There may be building work involved and the wardrobe company should be able to project manage all of that for you.
The finished result of having a really excellent storage space that fits sympathetically with your classic décor will be well worth the work and effort, and something that you will enjoy for years to come.
