A compact 5m² bathroom redesigned to improve safety, accessibility, and daily independence for the homeowner.
The homeowner had a physical disability that made it hard to use a standard bathroom safely. Everyday tasks like showering, moving around the space, or using the toilet, were becoming difficult and unsafe. Because of this, the bathroom needed to be changed so it could better support her needs.
This project was funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The goal was straightforward: to create a bathroom that was safe, easy to navigate, and allowed the homeowner to be more independent in her daily life.
The Refresh Renovations team was tasked with transforming the small 5m² bathroom into a space that offered comfort, safety, and accessibility, all while adhering to NDIS guidelines.
This renovation did not require any design drawings because it followed the NDIS scope directly. Instead, the team worked from a set budget of $44,000 and focused on meeting accessibility and safety requirements.
The homeowner had been waiting a long time for this work to be approved through government processes. Once the job was ready to begin, the team ensured everything was correctly planned to meet the NDIS requirements.
Key goals of the new bathroom included:
Because this was an NDIS project, the primary focus was functionality, safety, and ease of use.
The construction work took a total of 4 weeks and was completed on time. A team of skilled tradespeople worked together, including:
The Refresh team handled all the work, including the demolition of old fixtures and the installation of new accessible features.
1. Grab Bars and Safety Rails
Strong grab bars were installed at key points, such as near the toilet and inside the shower. These bars help the homeowner move safely without slipping or losing balance.
2. Walk-In, Roll-In Shower
The team installed a shower with no step, making it easy to enter using mobility aids. The floor has a non-slip surface to reduce the risk of falls.
3. Raised Toilet
A raised toilet was fitted to make sitting and standing easier and safer.
4. More Space to Move
The bathroom layout was modified to provide more space for turning and moving around. It helps with wheelchair or walker access.
5. Shower Bench and Hand-Held Shower
A built-in bench allows the homeowner to sit comfortably while showering, and the adjustable hand-held shower offers more control and convenience.
6. Calm, Bright Colours
Soft, calming colours were used to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in the bathroom. It makes daily routines more pleasant and less stressful.
Everything installed was practical, durable, and designed to support long-term use.
There were no significant construction challenges in this project. The only complexity was that, as it was an NDIS project, communication had to adhere to strict guidelines.
While Refresh was directly in touch with the homeowner, official discussions and approvals had to go through the NDIS-appointed Project Manager. Although this added extra steps, the Refresh team handled communication smoothly and kept the project running on time.
The homeowner had never worked with Refresh before, so everything was new to her. Her main hope was to finally have a bathroom that she could use safely and without fear of slipping or struggling.
Because this project had already faced delays due to government processes, she was very relieved when work began. She had no timing demands. She simply wanted a bathroom that worked for her needs.
The Refresh team communicated clearly, explained every step, and made sure the homeowner felt comfortable throughout the build. The NDIS funding covered the approved budget, giving her confidence that the project was financially secure.
By the end of the renovation, the homeowner felt thankful and happy with the result. The new space made her daily life much easier and safer.
This bathroom modification demonstrates how a small space can be transformed to significantly improve someone's quality of life. The Refresh team delivered a safe, accessible, and beautiful bathroom, all within the timeline and budget.
It’s a great example of how thoughtful design and skilled construction can support people with disabilities, helping them live more confidently at home.
