Modern bathroom

Every renovation comes with a challenge or two. For this bathroom in Corrimal, that challenge was a compromised floor structure.

When the bathroom of this Corrimal cottage began to reach its 30 year age mark, homeowner Steven decided that it was time for a renovation. As the only bathroom in the house, it was in desperate need of a makeover. He contacted the Illawarra renovation specialist to discuss the possibility of a bathroom makeover along with a skylight installation and drainage issue solutions. After designs were drawn up and quotes approved, the transformation began.
“The skylight in the kitchen was not functioning well, and the customers wanted another skylight over the dining table”, explains the renovation specialist, adding, “the customer told us that whenever it rained water was being diverted down their driveway and under their house.”
The largest project, however, was the bathroom.

Bathroom design

“The layout of the bathroom was quite poor; with the water closet in a position right near the door, which compromised privacy. The inclusions were outdated, and the customers found it hard to clean”, explains the renovation specialist. “The bathroom had been renovated in the 1990s. There was a significant drainage problem and an obvious lip in the floor.”
“It was estimated that the build would take five weeks, however after the demolition took place, we realised the structural integrity of the bathroom floors and walls were seriously compromised. Works were pushed back in order to rectify the problems found. A new flooring substrate was created and the walls were reframed. This extended the build time by two weeks.”
Pushing through the structural challenges, the Refresh team designed and installed an attractive, functional bathroom.

Bathroom renovation

The bathroom’s original white and brown colour theme was changed to clean white walls and grey floor tiles, making the space feel lighter and more spacious. The original shower cubicle, which separated the toilet from the rest of the bathroom, was removed; creating much more open space. A walk in shower was installed next to a new elegant bathtub, with the skylight above providing a view of the outdoors.

their attention to detail was second to none and their ability to manage their workers was exceptional
Allowing for more privacy, the toilet was moved toward the end of the bathroom, next to the newly installed, traditional style vanity. Mirrored cabinets were installed above, and in line with the vanity. This provided Steven and his family with practical and attractive bathroom storage.

Final thoughts

Changing the layout of the bathroom was the best decision they made, says Steven.
The bathroom was completed within Steven’s budget of $30,000, with the additional skylight, drainage issues and structural issues adding just under $20,000 to the project cost.
“The original estimation was based upon the concepts developed. The final cost was compiled after quotes were finalised and inclusions selected. The customers wanted to spend $30,000 on the bathroom, but then there were other things added onto the job during the concept stage”, tells the renovation specialist.
The Refresh team provided a final result that was just what Steven wanted. He readily recommends Refresh Renovations to other homeowners.
“They were pleasant people, their attention to detail was second to none and their ability to manage their workers was exceptional.”
