A One-Stop Shop

Retired couple Sue and Clinton were set on spending their later years with their daughter and her family on an acreage they had purchased together in Crest Hill, QLD. The only obstacle to overcome was converting the dark and dated downstairs rumpus room into a light and modern separate dwelling where they could enjoy their own space when not spending time with their grandchildren.

Having never embarked on a renovation of this magnitude, the couple were after a one-stop shop where they could put their vision in expert hands. Reaching out for help and advice, they contacted local Crest Hill Renovation Consultant Martin Peirone to bring their ideas to life.

Budgeting Big Ideas

With existing electricity and plumbing in the dwelling, Sue and Clinton needed a bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen designed and built. Space was tight at 45m2, so they also wanted to explore an extension.

Completing the initial concept and feasibility study, Martin found that the budget of $100,000 didn’t extend to expanding the footprint of the dwelling, but Sue and Clinton trusted Martin and his team to design and build a smart, functional, and comfortable home within the existing space. A second concept and feasibility study was undertaken without the extension. From this, Sue and Clinton were happy to move forward and construction began.

From Demolition to Decorating

Over a period of three months, Martin’s team took care of every part of Sue and Clinton’s renovation from demolition to painting. Inside, work included installing a new kitchen and bathroom, laying modern flooring, relocating patio and entrance doors, updating the electricals, installing cabinetry, and painting and decorating. Outside, Martin and his team built a new deck and moved the exterior AC unit and water heater to the side of the house.

The extent of the renovation meant there were a lot of moving parts. Martin’s expertise and one-stop shop philosophy came in handy, managing all suppliers and contractors to complete their individual tasks and keep the project moving.

While a specific finish date wasn’t part of the mandate, Sue and Clinton were sharing the main house with the whole family during the construction period, and they were keen to move into their own space. The project took a total of three months to complete, including two months of shutdown over the Christmas and New Year period, which speaks to Martin’s efficiency in getting the job done. A Smart Space, Inside and Out in Gold Coast

The finished result is a smart, bright secondary dwelling where Sue and Clinton are happily enjoying their space with family nearby. The light, modern kitchen presents a functional space with crisp lines, sleek hardwood, and a stylish subway tile splashback, while the blonde laminate flooring complements the bright white of the walls and cabinetry, adding cohesion throughout the home. The smart floor-to-ceiling cabinetry feature creates separation between the living and sleeping areas, while providing added storage and décor opportunities aplenty.

While Sue and Clinton’s budget may not have allowed for an extension on the dwelling, the new deck and sunshade, combined with the outlook onto the extensive greenery of the property, gives the feeling of increased functional space. Relocating the front door and the sliding patio doors creates a natural flow through the property and out onto the new deck, encouraging anyone in the home to take advantage of the outdoor space.

In Good Hands

Martin was able to bring Sue and Clinton’s retirement dreams to life with this small but modern secondary dwelling. Providing a one-stop shop for their renovation needs meant the couple were able to enjoy the holiday period with family, knowing that their future was in good hands. While budget and timing threw up challenges, Martin’s experience and management meant the team pulled through to deliver on time and on budget. Of the result, Martin says it’s a space he’d be very happy to live in!
