Reaching Out for Advice

Remuera homeowner Mac had a kitchen that was outdated and in dire need of a modern upgrade. Mismatched cabinetry gave the kitchen a dated look but there was also water damage that needed to be addressed and rectified.
With a view to selling his home in the coming years, Mac contacted Refresh Renovation Consultants John and Maree de Latour to discuss a kitchen renovation. Unsure of what he could accomplish with a kitchen makeover or even what it would cost, Mac was open to their ideas and suggestions.
John and Maree showed some examples of their previous renovation projects to give Mac some ideas of potential solutions and preliminary costs.

Leaving Nothing to Chance

Following consultation, John and Maree worked with Mac to develop a plan that would retain the footprint and plumbing of the kitchen (a significant cost-saver), make use of the existing pantry, and increase the amount of storage space.
With the basic design agreed, working drawings were developed, detailing all of the changes required. John and Maree guided Mac through these steps, proposing an improved layout and modern finishes, thereby ensuring the end result would meet all of his objectives.
John and Maree estimated the full renovation would cost $40,000; the final cost came in at $42,350.

Pandemic Challenges

The project ran into delays when Auckland was placed in an extended Covid lockdown, delaying the start of construction. When building work did begin, all tradespeople had to work under Covid social distancing guidelines, which meant previous project timeframes were extended. Renovation Consultant John liaised with all of the subcontractors to ensure work proceeded as close to the agreed timeline as possible.
From start to finish, the project was completed in 104 days.

Same Footprint, Different Look

The placement of the sink, pantry and stove-top didn’t change in this kitchen renovation, but updated cabinetry, lighting, and a new layout have dramatically improved the efficiency of the space.
The wall-mounted oven was replaced with a built-in under-bench model, freeing up room for a more accessible floor-to-ceiling cupboard. Meanwhile an integrated rangehood with shallow cupboards in front makes better use of all available space.
The pantry has been refreshed and finished with a matching handleless door. And, with all small appliances now having a dedicated home, there is more bench space for clear work surfaces.
Newly installed task lighting over the existing peninsula has increased its usability, and the new double sink accented by chrome tapware, completes the modern look.

Clever Design Choices Create a Sense of Space

Replacing and extending all of the kitchen cupboards to ceiling height has provided much more storage space, and their sleek handleless doors ensure a chic, clutter-free look.
The striking white marble-look benchtop with grey veins carries over seamlessly to the upstands and splashback, while the elegant surface adds a touch of glamour to the kitchen but is easy to maintain.
Given the small area, the design solution of minimising the number of materials and colours used has given the kitchen a stylish, unified look, while creating the illusion of more space.

Final Thoughts

By improving the efficiency of the kitchen and increasing its storage solutions, Mac now has a modern and streamlined space that he can be proud of.
“The final result is stunning,” reflects Maree. “We’re delighted to have created an efficient kitchen for Mac that looks clean and elegant.”
