Beginning the Journey

One street away from Waihi beach sits Erin and Tony’s holiday home. Waihi is their place of rest and relaxation; it’s their escape from the bustle of everyday life.
Due to the sheer amount of time they spend at the bach, the homeowners decided to give their bathrooms and laundry a makeover to modernise the interiors. But while getting the design right was important, they also wanted to improve the overall practicality of each room.
Unsure of where to begin, Erin and Tony approached local Renovation Partner Peter Jenkins with their vision. With Peter’s assistance, they could step back and enjoy the process, knowing he’d manage all finer details and keep them updated with each step. As Erin and Tony weren’t living in the house full-time, it was additionally beneficial for them to have someone oversee the entire renovation.
The beach house renovation was carried out over a short nine weeks and came in at $70,000. Peter carefully considered the homeowners’ budget throughout the process and carefully made decisions for cost-effective results.

Modern Bathrooms for the Bach

The bathrooms now share a beautiful modern design to make for cohesive interiors. When walking into each space, the first thing you notice is their charcoal feature walls and dark wood-look vinyl flooring. Completed with the help of Peter’s colour consultant at Resene, this bold look strays away from the soft neutral hues commonly found in bathrooms.
But while they share matching colour schemes, the bathrooms are made unique with their own statement splashbacks. Both splashbacks keep to the dress code in shades of grey, though one is made of hexagonal tiling and the other features rectangular stack bond tiling.
Circular mirrors make practical yet modern additions, with one featuring built-in LED lighting controlled through the click of a button at its base. The new floating vanities are another functional improvement, made with deep drawers perfect for storing bottles of sunscreen and extra toiletries that live at the bach.
When designing their showers, the homeowners opted to install shower cubicles to avoid the lengthy and costly process of obtaining council consent for something different. Replacing the previous shubs that were outdated and impractical, the new showers are highly welcomed additions!

A Sleek Laundry Room

With functionality at its core, this laundry is fully equipped to handle all the washing that comes with bach-life. The washing machine and dryer are positioned underneath the expansive benchtop, while off to the side is a deep laundry sink and cabinet space.
The interior is brought together by a beautiful blend of soft neutrals. Off-white subway tiling spans the length of the buttercream-coloured laundry bench, and dark vinyl flooring completes the space, creating an elegant room for taking care of sandy towels and swimwear.

The Perfect Home Away from Home

Erin and Tony are thrilled with their upgraded Waihi beach house, telling Peter, “we’ve been so pleased with your services and have told anyone who will listen”.
The bathrooms have been modernised with a sleek design made of charcoal feature walls, dark vinyl flooring, statement splashbacks, and floating vanities. However, they’re more than visually pleasing. Each bathroom has become more functional, upgraded with new fixtures and plentiful storage space. As for the laundry, this room now meets the practical needs of beachside living – while looking a little bit glamorous.
Materials used include general building supplies from Mitre10, tapware from Robertson Bathware, and splashbacks tiling & vinyl planking from The Tile Depot.
Every aspect of this beach house renovation has been geared to improve functionality but still kept design at the forefront. What once were outdated spaces are now contemporary utility rooms that fit with the rest of the home.
