Internal doors have a great impact on the look and feel of your space – and the recent trend of using black-framed metal glass doors brings a bit of New York loft-style glamour to your home.

Aluminium framed glass internal doors

Internal doors have a great impact on the look and feel of your space – and the recent trend of using black-framed metal glass doors brings a bit of New York loft-style glamour to your home.

Even in a predominantly open-plan space, some internal doors will be needed to define areas, whether that’s to close off and separate hallways, office spaces, walk-in wardrobes or bathrooms and showers.

What are the best style options?

Pivot doors add sleek sophistication with a minimalist profile. The pivoting doors make a real design statement, with or without gridlines on the glass. On a practical note, they let the light flood in while keeping it warm. PortaPivot doors ( are made to measure and shipped worldwide from Belgium. They are one of the most popular pivot door systems in the US. The anodized aluminium frame comes in three colours. The hinge is mounted straight on top of a finished solid floor and underneath a solid or reinforced ceiling surface, without the need for any built-in fixtures. Anyway Doors ( also manufacture glass pivot doors. They offer glass edge, frameless options as well as special glass type doors including doors with frosted glass, black glass, grey tempered glass and other coloured glass types.

Metal frame doors with a single glass pane or divided glass panes can also be installed to resemble French doors or regular single doors. Smaller glass doors are a great option for hallways or home offices. Black framed interior doors are hugely stylish and look stunning in most settings, from industrial through to elegant. For a touch of luxury, consider steel custom interior doors. Crittall, based in the United Kingdom, are the original makers of steel windows and offer a range of customisable interior glazed steel screens including glass walls and doors ( Black-framed screens and doors – steel or aluminium – are increasingly popular for showers and bathrooms, too, adding a real wow-factor to even a small space.

Internal glass and aluminium sliding doors can work well to subtly separate different areas, such as a dining room from the living area. They create a modern feel and let lots of light in while keeping noise levels down and creating a more intimate dining experience. Stikla sliding doors by Door2000 in Italy (, for example, have a lightweight, hardly visible aluminium frame that blends into the room. Faraone’s Velo Alu system is at the high end of the spectrum and provides designer glass doors on a large scale ( The company is also based in Italy, with products distributed and installed around the globe. The advantage of sliding doors is that they need little extra space to open. This makes them ideal choices for smaller homes as well as for en-suites and walk-in wardrobes. Frosted glass can be used to provide privacy.

Do internal glass and metal doors suit my home?

Sleek and contemporary in style, black-framed internal doors can work well in many different types of homes. The look works well in modern homes and can be adapted and personalised to fit most settings. Steel-framed windows and doors go hand in hand with Art Deco houses. But even older, traditional villas can look stunning with a pivoting glass door that for examples leads from the original part of the house into a newer, more modern addition.

And while metal frames are trending world over, you can also combine glass panes with wooden doorframes for a country-inspired look, for example, or install solid wood pivot doors to suit your interior design.

Can I personalise the look?

Glass and metal frame doors come in all different sizes and designs. You can have internal doors custom made to suit your space, including floor to ceiling metal frame glass doors, curved glass doors or room divider glass doors that are incorporated into a glass wall. Larger spaces can look stunning when divided by folding black glass frame doors or stackable sliders, as offered by Barausse (

Other ways of personalising glass and metal doors include using glass with frosted or printed designs or installing different coloured glass. From a functional point of view, you can opt for single, or double-glazed panes or for security glass.
