A thoughtful redesign turned an outdated home into a modern, functional space for family living.
The owners of this 1970s home had recently moved in and wanted to improve the layout to accommodate their growing family. The house had been extended years ago, but the design no longer worked for them. Some areas were closed off, while others were underused.
They contacted the Refresh Renovations team to redesign the layout, making the home more open, practical, and comfortable. The plan was to modify the internal design, add new rooms, and create additional space for the children.
The total renovation covered about 100 square metres. It included moving walls, creating a new bedroom and family area, and upgrading key parts of the home. The goal was to create a space that suited family life, both now and in the future.
The clients worked closely with the Refresh design team to explore different layout options. Several design concepts were prepared so they could see what worked best for their needs and budget.
Since the home had been built decades ago and undergone unusual extensions, it was crucial to carefully examine the existing structure before making any significant changes. The team’s architect and engineer reviewed which walls were load-bearing and determined how they could be safely moved.
The final design plan focused on smart changes rather than large extensions. It kept the structure mostly the same but re-arranged the rooms for better flow and more family space. A clear project timeline and budget were then agreed upon, with the work divided into stages, allowing the family to plan for future upgrades easily.
Once the design was approved, the construction team began work. The project included:
All major trades were involved, including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, plasterers, glaziers, and cabinetmakers, ensuring that every part of the job was done professionally and on time.
Even with a detailed plan, renovations often bring surprises. The project required teamwork and strong communication between trades to ensure each step flowed smoothly.
Every renovation has its challenges, and this one was no different.
One of the main issues was that the previous home extension had been built using unusual techniques. When the team started work, they realised some structural elements did not match standard construction methods.
It meant extra checks with the engineer were needed. By working closely with the engineer and adjusting the plans, the team was able to make the home safe and stable without slowing the project.
Despite these challenges, the build remained on schedule and within budget, finishing two days ahead of schedule.
The homeowners were busy parents with children entering high school, so they wanted minimal disruption and a trusted team to handle everything. They appreciated that the Refresh team managed the entire process.
They felt confident in the team’s planning, communication, and attention to detail. Even when challenges arose, they were kept informed and understood every decision being made. The clients especially liked how the renovation was staged, allowing them to finish this part of the project now and plan future upgrades later.
The finished renovation provided the family with exactly what they needed: a home that suited their lifestyle.
The new layout feels open, modern, and welcoming. There is now a separate family space for the kids and a new bedroom that adds flexibility as the family grows. By removing the old kitchenette and reorganising doors and walls, the house now flows naturally from one room to another.
The work was completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. What started as a dated 1970s layout has now evolved into a functional and comfortable modern home.
The project demonstrates how an innovative redesign can completely transform a home's feel and functionality without necessitating a complete rebuild.
By working closely with the clients, engineers, and trades, the Refresh Renovations team turned an old, awkward layout into a practical family home. The project was completed on time and on budget, leaving the homeowners ready to enjoy their new spaces for years to come.
