Kitchen interior makeover

Such was the meticulous planning and execution of this project, the ‘after’ photos give the impression of a new-build. A complete overhaul of the dated interior has created modern, bright, and cohesive living spaces in this Burwood family home.

The owners of this well-loved family home in Burwood wanted to give it a new lease of life. All of the original features and decor in this double-storey home were looking dated and making the shared spaces feel cramped and unwelcoming.

When reaching out to Refresh Renovations Consultant Paul Cree, the owners were looking for a refurbishment of the entire interior, including a complete renovation of the kitchen and bathrooms, along with adjustments to the use of some areas.

Budget and timeframes were also key priorities, as the family would need to vacate the house during the renovation. Although realistic about the cost of such a major refresh, the homeowners wanted to ensure they maximised the gains from their substantial investment.

Considered Advice and Expert Planning

Renovation Consultant Paul Cree was delighted to get to grips with the project. Such a large transformation meant the whole home would feel brand-new, which would be incredibly satisfying to both his clients and the Refresh Renovations team.

Careful design and planning were crucial. With Paul’s support throughout, the family worked with the team’s interior designer to develop designs and layouts that modernised and created the ideal family home. Every item needed for the renovation was included in the specifications and Paul guided his clients in making informed choices about budget-influencing items such as benchtop material, floor covering options, and walk-in wardrobe specifications.

His suggestion of moving the laundry area into the garage to make way for a walk-in pantry in the kitchen was also a winner. This Refresh process of careful design, documentation, and planning set the scene for a smooth-running renovation.

More Than a Facelift

With neither structural challenges nor consent processes involved, Paul and his team could get started once the carefully considered designs were approved and signed off.

The scale of this renovation was massive. Kitchen, laundry, pantry, family bathroom, en suite, powder room, walk-in wardrobe, full internal painting, carpet, timber flooring, and lighting: all were on the list. Even with the meticulous prior planning, scheduling the full team of skilled personnel required at different stages – tiler/ painter/ plasterer/ carpenter/ glazier/ waterproofer/ electrician/ plumber/ cabinetmaker/ stonemason – could have become a nightmare, but skilled project management and the commitment of Paul’s trusted network ensured that all went almost to plan.

Limited trade availability at one key point meant the project timeline estimate did run over, but Paul and his team were able to minimise the impact for the homeowners who were also kept constantly informed through the online project management platform.

Sleek, Modern, and Welcoming

Gone are the dull colours, intrusive walls and awkward flow: light, space and warmth are now the immediate impressions upon entry. Timber flooring throughout the open-plan living areas and kitchen is the perfect complement to the soft grey and white colour palette, enhanced by ample natural light and carefully positioned LED lighting.

The multi-purpose kitchen peninsula with its marbled benchtop provides workspace and opportunity for social interaction while the positioning of both the pantry and cooking facilities reduces the need for a high daily step count in the kitchen! Ample storage has been provided within both pantry and kitchen, and handleless cabinetry throughout further emphasises the elegance of the new kitchen’s design.

Clever use of tiles and stylish cabinetry together with modern fixtures in new layouts have transformed both bathrooms into high-end yet supremely functional spaces. New carpet upstairs, fresh paint in every room, rewiring throughout: no detail was overlooked in the planning stages and the result is evident in every room.

Final Thoughts

Their address hasn’t changed, but for Paul’s delighted clients, their home certainly has! And Paul shares their excitement and pleasure at the outcome. “The open-plan modern kitchen is an amazing transformation. The space feels so much lighter and brighter and more connected to the dining area. I also love the new timber floors; they make the home very welcoming, providing warmth to the ground floor spaces.”
