A compact bathroom was transformed into a safer and more accessible space.
The homeowner needed a bathroom that was safer, easier to use, and suitable for their physical needs. The existing bathroom layout was too small and not practical for daily use. Moving around was difficult, and the space did not support accessibility equipment. As a result, the client applied for modifications through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The goal of this renovation was to create a bathroom that offered safety, comfort, and independence. To achieve this, the Refresh Renovations team implemented several modifications, including the addition of grab bars, the creation of a walk-in shower, the installation of a non-slip floor, the adjustment of sink height, and the expansion of the space by removing a dividing wall.
It was not a design-and-build project from Refresh. The bathroom layout was architect-designed with input from an Occupational Therapist, and Refresh Renovations handled all the construction work.
Because this was an NDIS project, the design planning was handled by an architect and an Occupational Therapist (OT). Their goal was to create a bathroom that adhered to NDIS guidelines while still maintaining a clean, modern, and welcoming appearance.
Key design plans included:
The design aimed to strike a balance between safety, ease of use, and a simple, tidy appearance. The total approved budget was $55,000, funded by the NDIS.
The entire build took five weeks, with no significant delays. A range of skilled tradespeople were involved in completing the modifications to a high standard:
1. Removing the Internal Wall
The team removed the wall separating the toilet and bathroom. It instantly doubled the usable space, providing the homeowner with a safe area to move around.
2. Walk-In, Non-Slip Shower
A new open shower was installed with a non-slip floor to reduce the risk of falls. It also provides easy access for individuals with mobility aids.
3. Grab Bars Installed
Grab bars were added throughout the bathroom to support movement, balance, and safer transitions.
4. Adjusted Sink Height
The sink was installed at a height that makes everyday use easier for the homeowner.
5. Raised Toilet (If required by architect/OT)
A raised toilet was considered to reduce effort when sitting and standing.
6. Collapsible Shower Bench
A foldable shower bench was included to support safe seated showering.
7. Tiling, Painting & Finishing
The bathroom was tiled, plastered, waterproofed, and painted in soft, clean colours for a non-clinical and straightforward finish.
There were no significant challenges during this project. Everything ran smoothly and followed the normal steps required in NDIS modification work. The only key factor was ensuring that all modifications met the requirements set by the architect, Occupational Therapist, and NDIS guidelines.
The homeowner had no previous bad experiences with Refresh or other builders. They simply wanted the work done as soon as possible because they had already faced delays from the NDIS approval process.
Their main priority was:
Since this was an NDIS-funded project, the client did not need to worry about budget decisions. Two builders typically provide quotes, and the most suitable quote is chosen for the project.
The client was extremely pleased with the outcome. The bathroom now feels open, safe, and easy to use, without looking cold or medical. It offers the practicality needed for daily living while still feeling like part of a comfortable home.
The completed bathroom is:
This transformation demonstrates how thoughtful modifications can significantly enhance comfort, safety, and independence.
