A Need for Space

This charming three-bedroom brick bungalow in the residential suburb of Oakleigh South was in good condition but lacked the amenities needed for a busy modern family. The single bathroom felt cramped and created queues, while the master bedroom was small with little wardrobe space.
With an Australian HomeBuilder Grant available for significant renovations, owner Chris knew it was the perfect time to add much needed space to his Melbourne home. Chris contacted local Renovation Consultant Paul Cree to discuss ideas and options.

Refining the Focus

When Chris first contacted Paul, he was unsure of exactly what could be achieved with his budget. He didn’t have an exact vision for the renovation but he did have clear goals: to add space and storage, an additional toilet, and to improve the layout of key areas in his home.
With a deadline in place to be eligible for the government grant, Paul worked quickly and collaboratively with Chris to refine the focus down to the highest priorities, and to do those exceptionally well. The pair worked through several concepts before settling on extending the house to provide a spacious new master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, and creating a larger, more modern family bathroom.

Expert Management

With the concept in place, Paul was able to draw up detailed plans and costings for Chris to approve before construction work began. Paul remained Chris’ single point of contact throughout the entire renovation, from design to delivery, providing valuable reassurance as Melbourne’s COVID-related lockdowns became the longest in the world.
The size and scope of the renovation involved an extensive range of skilled tradespeople, all of whom were scheduled and rescheduled multiple times. Since Chris and his family remained living in their home throughout the renovation, the carefully planned schedule was constantly interrupted: during lockdowns, no construction work could take place on occupied properties. Together with his expert project management team, Paul worked extremely hard to minimise the impact of construction and supply delays, and kept Chris well informed at every stage.
From asbestos removal to building and bricklaying, tiling and glazing to painting and plastering, carpet laying, electrical work and plumbing, the success of the renovation was dependent on effective coordination and top quality work. During construction, the team discovered a blocked and irreparable stormwater pipe. The essential excavation and installation of new pipe was an unexpected and additional cost but, with Paul’s open communication, Chris appreciated that this was not an optional extra.

Transformative Results

Paul and his team have delivered a stunning renovation that adds space, style, and functionality for Chris and his family. The transformed master bedroom allowed the original bedroom to be converted into a walk-in wardrobe and beautiful ensuite. Large format tiles run from floor to ceiling in the ensuite to create a seamless flow that adds to the spacious feel. A double vessel sink vanity with wall mounted tapware adds a touch of luxe, while the walk-in shower with edgeless glass further adds to the feeling of modern style and space.
The family bathroom was also extended and is now a contemporary and clutter-free space that Chris loves. Floor to ceiling tiles elevate the room to a new level of sophistication and make the room feel longer. A free-standing bath provides a focal point and combines with a second edgeless glass walk-in shower and elegant vessel sink to complete the luxurious new space.
Both the ensuite and the family bathroom gained extra style during the lockdown delays since Chris decided to make significant upgrades to the tapware and also opted to install

Stylish Sanctuary

This Oakleigh South home underwent a major transformation. The newly built master suite now provides a stylish sanctuary for the owners and the family bathroom is a sophisticated addition for the household. Paul is thrilled with the results. “The home now has a modern layout with a master suite, and the generous bathroom is more family-friendly,” he says. And with this first major renovation such a success, Chris can now turn his mind to his other goal…a renovated kitchen and laundry.
